EARLY PERIOD
Kim Nam-joon was born on September 12, 1994, in Dongjak-gu, South Korea, and grew up in Ilsangu, and his family moved when he was four or five. He has two brothers and a younger sister.

RM learned English largely by watching Friends with his mother as a child. As a student, he actively wrote poetry and frequently received awards for his writings. For about a year she published her work on an online poetry site, where she received moderate attention. Thanks to this, RM boosted his interest in a literary career, but decided against it. RM became interested in hip-hop music when he was 11 years old after listening to Epik High’s “Fly” in fifth grade. He found that the song gave him comfort, so he decided to look further into the genre. After meeting American rapper Eminem, RM sparked an interest in lyrics by his school teacher, printing the lyrics he thought “cool” and sharing them with his friends. RM later switched to songwriting, noting that his poetry combined with the music became the lyrics. In 2007, as a middle school student, RM began rapping in local amateur hip-hop circles and created his first self-composed recording using the Adobe Audition (later called Cool Edit) program. Later, she attended her first concert in 2008. RM became more active in Korea’s underground hip-hop scene under the name “Runch Randa” and released a number of tracks and collaborations with other underground rappers like Zico.

RM scored among the top 1% in the country in college entrance exams for language, math, foreign language and social studies at school and had an IQ of 148. RM’s parents vehemently opposed his interest in his music career. Due to his academic achievements, RM decided to put music aside to focus on his studies. To convince her mother to let her become a rapper, she asked him if he “wanted to have a son who was a first-time rapper or a 5,000th student.”
